The Stabat Mater was once Domenico Scarlatti's most impressive work: defined by director Maëlle Dequiedt as ‘an attempt to overcome mourning through the expression of desire’, Simon-Pierre Bestion has freely adapted the score, using instruments from a wide range of origins and periods. A dazzlingly theatrical work - at times very close to opera - this Stabat Mater is performed by a new cast of 4 actors and 10 singers, combining musical refinement with powerful stage images. Maëlle Dequiedt takes us on an iconoclastic and transgressive journey through the centuries: new colours are revealed, the work takes on a new dramaturgical scope, and this Stabat Mater plunges the audience into a sensory and sensitive experience never before enjoyed, to be savoured with urgency.
