To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, La Cité Bleue Genève is dedicating two days to one of the absolute pinnacles of chamber music: the complete cycle of his string quartets. On Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, a series of concerts will unfold like a vast musical fresco, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the heart of this monumental work.
This journey, conceived in collaboration with cellist François Kieffer of the Modigliani Quartet, is designed as a true exploration and allows listeners to trace the composer’s striking evolution. From the early quartets of Opus 18, still marked by the legacy of Haydn and Mozart, to his final visionary masterpieces, Beethoven explores and transforms the musical language with remarkable boldness. Each stage reveals a facet of his genius: formal rigor, dramatic momentum, experimentation, and, in his late works, an almost metaphysical depth.
To present this complete cycle, several of the most exciting quartets of their generation will take turns on stage: the Modigliani, Arete, Elmire, Novo, Métamorphoses, and Leonkoro Quartets. This diversity of approaches and sensibilities will offer a vibrant interpretation of the cycle.
To enhance this immersive experience, each concert will open with a literary introduction featuring texts that resonate with Beethoven’s world, offering another gateway to his music.
More than just a marathon, this complete cycle is an experience not to be missed: a celebration of the string quartet as a space for freedom, artistic rigor, and creativity, where Beethoven distilled the full power of his imagination.
