Born in Namur in 1507, Arcadelt was one of the first great madrigal composers: his works, imbued with grace and sensuality, have stood the test of time and still speak to us today. His music, shaped by Franco-Flemish, Italian, and Roman influences, blends sumptuous counterpoint, refined vocal lines, and poetry that touches the heart. Monteverdi was surprised that, in his day, more collections of Arcadelt’s works were still being sold than his own; and as an example of his popularity, one of his scores appears in Caravaggio’s The Lute Player.
